A Gabriel Chanan talk and discussion on how and why European artists moved from flat medieval symbolism to the in-depth imagery of realistic representation? With fascinating illustrations Gabriel finds ‘missing links’ revealing the emergence of artists’ ground-breaking treatment of light and space. He shows first how the roots of observation lay dormant in medieval imagery and then how increasingly ambitious content drove the inward expansion of pictorial space and innovations in the depiction of light.

Netherlands painters such as Van Eyck, Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden pursued increasing precision in exploring how light behaves in indoor spaces, while Italian painters like Giotto, Raphael and Tintoretto found ingenious ways to integrate holy light into naturalistic settings.

Ewa Szaniawska talks about Poland: Through the Eyes of Artists, or A gallop through Polish Art. Where is Poland, as Polish borders have constantly changed throughout history and current post WW2 borders were not even decided by Poland… but by the Allies.

Because of its strategic position Poland was frequently invaded by Teutonic Knights, Swedes, Russians, Tartars, Monguls etc. Poland as a result became a very diverse country with many different cultures and ethnic groups. Poland completely disappeared as a country between 1795 and 1918 as it was divided between Russian, Prussian and Austro Hungarian Empires. During this time there were efforts to suppress Polish culture (unsuccessfully!) When Poland was re-established in 1945 even then it was under the full control of Communist Russia.

These and many other factors have had a huge impact on Polish art and artists. This talk is very visual, introducing a broad selection of art from some of the most famous and influential Polish artists throughout the ages. What inspired them, the historical context, influences, impact of the art within and outside Poland etc?

FRIDAY 31ST OCTOBER 7.00-8.30pm FREE with tickets
The Royal Harmonics male a cappella group and the Windsor Boys School "harmony" group called The Screech Boys provide a varied and exciting evening of music spanning the years. Youth and maturity on stage together. The Royal Harmonics is the performing chorus of Windsor A Cappella, a club founded in 2000 by six guys who shared a vision of ‘singing excellence and serious fun’. Within eighteen months the group had grown in number to 20 and in 2002 serenaded HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal party in Windsor as part of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

They are now much in demand to perform at events and festivals at home and abroad. Their first CD, Yours Harmonically, released in 2004, showcased the clean unified sound that became their trademark. With people moving away from CDs they have embraced the digital age, with more recent performances being on YouTube.
